Phillip spent his early years with his parents on a cattle station knocking about with his brothers before discovering his passion for horses. His father had always had a close affinity with horses’, so it wasn’t long before he was in there helping break-in and educate the stations young horses.
At the age of fifteen, a riding career beckoned not long after he found himself apprenticed to John Hall at Morphettville moving to the Northern Territory to complete his apprenticeship in Alice Springs with Viv Oldfield, where Phillip continued to ride winners. Nature took over and Phillip’s weight increased making it difficult for him to continue with his career in the saddle, making one of life’s decisions to pack his bags and head abroad to broaden his knowledge base visiting some of the leading Thoroughbred training stables in the world including Bill Mott in America, John Hammond in France prior to his journey to Japan where he spent a decade at Taiki Farm and met his wife Ayumi, with her unequivocal support of Phillip’s career as well as encouraging their sons, Tom, and Kerrin to be very much a part of the Team.
Phillip’s local and international knowledge has become invaluable in the way he approaches his training methods, believing a direct approach when it comes to his Thoroughbreds, and can get them ready to peak for the moment. He is an advocate of regular beach work, chiropractor’s manipulation, massage to help with their bones and muscles which supports his prevention approach, combining this with personalised dietary attention to every Thoroughbred under his care it’s proving to be a healthy, successful, and happy Team environment.
Since opening stables at Pakenham, along with a barn in his home state South Australia which has given the stable flexibility and those results are filtering through during the 2021/22 racing season, 01 August 21 until 31 July 22, they saddled up the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200 m.) winner Daqiansweet Junior the galloper banked more than $366,000 for connections from his five wins during that timeframe, Mileva won the Alinghi, Kensington & Sir John Monash Stakes the banking more than $345,000 for her owner. At the conclusion of this season the Team had record 94 individual winners from 717-runners, which equates to a healthy 13.1% strike rate, this achievement is complimented with the fact only 55-runners didn’t collect prizemoney from the stables 717 starters.
Phillip Stokes Racing have four Group 1 victories to their credit three from the Adelaide base with the Australasian Oaks winners Marju Snip and Maybe Discreet, along with million-dollar earner Hucklebuck winner of the Emirates (Cantala) Stakes on the final day of the Flemington Spring Carnival in 2014. From the Victorian stable it was Mr. Quickie that kicked the new location off to a grand start when the gelded son of Shamus Award won the 2020 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600 m.) for his group of connections.
Phillip’s dedication, family and equine values are a good fit for Hope Eden Racing as they send a second Thoroughbred for him to nurture and develop.
