Trainer Details

Peter Gelagotis based in the Gippsland area of Victoria, with a boutique stable that has built his reputation around a ‘quirky’ galloper called Mourinho that took his stable to a level that has brought the stable to the attention of owners' world-wide.

Mourinho, a gelded son of Oratorio (IRE), career has showcased Gelagotis’ skill with the bay racing from the age of three until nine, recording his first group one win for the trainer in the 2015 MRC Underwood Stakes. On that occasion Mourinho defeated Fawkner, and, The Cleaner - along the way Gelagotis placed Mourinho 47-times with the gelding winning 11-times, seven of those victories were at stakes level, recording another 11-placings earning his group of owners more than $1.3million.

It may have taken Peter 15-years to record his first group one win, the second took a year, with Malaguerra saluting for his connections in the 2016 VRC Darley Classic (registered name: Victoria Racing Club Stakes) on the last day of the Clubs famous Melbourne Cup carnival.

Gelagotis has a boutique stable that’s well equipped with 25 boxes all have their own day yards, at Moe. He is a hands-on trainer, ensuring all thoroughbreds under his care receive maximum attention to ensure the best possible results for their owners.

The stable is well equipped with a swimming pool treadmill and sand roll to ensure an environment that encourages the horses to ‘do well’ his staff are well trained, too, ensuring each horse is well cared for and their risk exposure is low.

Gelagotis utilises all three of the Moe Racing Club tracks - its course proper, inside grass and sand with the clubs principal training tracks open six-days a week. The Gippsland location allows Gelagotis to utilise the training circuits at Cranbourne, Sale and Pakenham for pre-race trials, or gallops to stimulate them during their preparations.

Gelagotis has easy access to a water walker that’s situated at nearby Shadowbrook farm or Fulman Park for any pre or post work thus ensuring the horses are well cared for during their preparations.

The stable utilises the services of the Melbourne Equine veterinary Dr. Peter Angus, or a member of his team, along with Dr. Lindsay Elliott for his massaging muscle work skill and Trevor Hatfield is the stable dentist, whilst calling on the expertise of Julien Welsh and Peter Dalziel to educate their young thoroughbreds.

The stables location allows Gelagotis, many options when placing the thoroughbreds being only two hours from many quality racetracks in the state allowing races to be programed over a variety of day or night racing locations.

All of this in-turn maximises the opportunity to return prize money to connections while saving on transport costs.

Peter’s brother, Manny runs the office and both men have the philosophy, quality care for their owners’ investment to ensure they get the best return from the horse, as well as the best service from his dedicated team to all connections.
