Elite Buys Another Sebring
Colt out of a mare by a WS Cox Plate winner, Rubiton
Elite Thoroughbreds really like the progeny by Golden Slipper winner Sebring (by More Than Ready). The horses stock are proven over an array of distances and differing track conditions .
Sebring has sired two Group 1 winners among his 23-stakes wiiners and they are Criterion winner of seven races including the ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, MRC Caulfield Stakes, ATC Derby & Rosehill Guineas and Dissident winner of the MRC Memsie Stakes, VRC Makybe Diva and the ATC's All Aged Stakes.
Current season four year-old and Elite syndicated colt, Sebring Sun won the Listed Rosebud Stakes and finished third to Exosphere in the Group 1 ATC Golden Rose durig the 2015-16 season.
Elite Thoroughbreds purchase yearlings by proven sires out of mares that have solid winning families and this colt underlines that philosophy. The dam I Love Rubies is a half-sister to Group 2 MVRC Crystal Mile winner Testa My Patience (by Testa Rossa) and Ninetyfive Emperor (by Rory's Jester) winner of the Singapore Lion City Cup (Singapore-Group 1).
I Love Rubies (by Rubiton) has since produced a filly by Helmet and was covered by Sun Stud's Magnus (by Flying Spur) last spring.
Not Enough? Elite Thoroughbreds report the colt has broken in well and has received his first educational campaign and recently went back into Portelli's Warwick Farm stables for his second preparation. Allan, is hopeful the colt will get to the races during the autumn for the states carnival.
The colt is a dark brown and looks similar to Dissident in appearance and pocesses a good sized girth and hindquarter as well as being out of a smart racemare, I Love Rubies a winner of three from seven starts that is by the Group 1 WS Cox Plate hero, Rubiton.
As a broodmare sire, Rubiton is showing his value with his daughters producing 38 stakes winners, of those six are at the highest level and include: Playing God (8 wins incl. WATC Kingston Town Classic), Dash for Cash (5 wins inc. VRC Australian Guineas & MRC Futurity Stakes), Flying Artie (3 wins inc. VRC Ascot Vale Stakes), Seventh Rock (6 wins inc Gold Medallion S AF), King of Danes (5 wins inc. HK Centenary Sprint Cup) and Amber Sky (7 wins inc. Centernary Sprint Cup HK & Al Quoz Sprint Dubai).
The syndicate will be managed by Elite Thoroughbreds.
Gary Portelli is a trainer with the philosophy to back the skills that have made him a million-dollar-a-year, Group One trainer.
"We pride ourselves on a staff that care for our horses," Portelli says.
"Our stable philosophy is that results are achieved from a combined effort. We ensure not only our horses are cared for but also our staff and owners."
Portelli's background in racing equipped him well to run a successful stable in one of the world's most competitive racing jurisdictions. His grandfather was a jockey, his mother a trainer and almost from the time he could walk, he could ride.
When he took over his mother's licence in 1990, and then moved from Orange in the NSW central west to Warwick Farm, he began learning about running a racing business - and his record suggests he learned well.
Portelli's first Group One winner came in 2007 with the success of Rena's Lady in the AJC Oaks, a second elite win was delivered by Gold Trail in 2010 in New Zealand's premier sprint, the Group One Railway Stakes at Ellerslie and his most recent was delivered by Rebel Dane in the Sir Rupert Clark Stakes at Caulfield.
One of the measures of Portelli's abilities is his success in training for syndicates.
His association with Elite Thoroughbreds has resulted a steady flow of winners, including I'm All The Talk, Testashadow (five wins and more than half-a-million in earnings), Sebring Sun, Cosmic Cameo, Next Level, Seeking Asylum and Miss Spoken.
Portelli, set the Elite Thoroughbreds owned Straturbo to win the 2015 Magic Millions Sprint (1100 m.) as well as finishing runner-up with Testashadow in the Magic Millions Guineas (1400 m.) on one of the most competitive race days on the Queensland calendar.
Portelli signed off the 2014-15 racing season with his runners returning more than $1.6million to connections on the back of $1.86million earned during the 2012-13 season. With just two months to run of the 2015-16 season Portelli stable earnings are nudging $1.5million.
Portelli happily shares whatever credit comes his way.
"I am a great believer in a team environment as far as my stable staff is concerned. It may be my name printed as trainer but it is having a great team that helps get the best out of each and every horse," Portelli says.
