Trainer Details

Henry Dwyer didn’t follow the conventional path in establishing himself as a trainer, it’s only taken Dwyer four seasons to established himself in the highly competitive Victorian training ranks.

Henry’s passion for the thoroughbred industry became evident from the tender age of eight and it has only strengthened in recent years’ which has bought him into the privileged position of being able to do a job he loves, every day of the week.

Dwyer has established a viable and sustainable business while providing an enjoyable ‘racing’ experience to like-minded individuals. Henry places a lot of weight on honesty, integrity and transparency in all his business and personal dealings, plus Dwyer owns a strong work ethic with a single-minded dedication to succeed.

Dwyer completed his secondary education at Xavier College, before commencing a Bachelor of Commerce/Arts degree at The University of Melbourne and while living on campus at Newman College he identified a part-time job was required to support his studies and begun working in the stables at Flemington, before his classes commenced, building on his lifelong love affair with the thoroughbred.

After graduating from University, Henry moved to Euroa in north-eastern Victoria and spent a year at Ealing Park Stud learning about where the journey begins for thoroughbreds and build on his knowledge base. Henry completed his advanced diploma in Horse Business Management at Marcus Oldham College in Geelong, graduating at a High Distinction level.

Not long after Dwyer was appointed stable foreman for Robert Smerdon working his way up to Assistant trainer for Smerdon, one of the Aquanita group, from his stables at Caulfield, a post Dwyer held for four years.

Dwyer then accepted an offer to move as Assistant trainer to Robert Hickmont private trainer for Lloyd Williams at Macedon Lodge. It was at Macedon Lodge, where Dwyer was exposed to another style of training and he was fortunate enough to be involved in Green Moon’s 2012 Melbourne Cup victory.

That experience whetted Henry’s appetite for an overseas jaunt, so in 2013 he travelled to Dubai, Newmarket, Chantilly, The Curragh, Ballydoyle and Hong Kong. Henry spent time with John Oxx (The Curragh, Ireland) and Criquette Head (Chantilly, France) returning home mid-2013.

In a short space of time, Henry has begun making his mark in the competitive Victorian training market from his stables at Caulfield and in Ballarat.

Dwyer has built on his early success when advising clients to buy Sonntag at a ‘tried racehorse’ sale. Dwyer, was able to get the gelding ‘happy and well’ to win the Listed Sale Cup en-route to his first Group 1 victory in 2014 the Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm during his second season of training.

Dwyer has since saddled-up a second Group 1 winner when Precious Gem (by Econsul) received a first-class ride from Jake Noonan to win the ultra competitive 2016 SAJC Robert Sangster Stakes (wfa 1200m.) in May.
